Combating Human Rights Violations and Modern Slavery in Public Supply Chains

We work closely with public buyers to support their efforts to develop human rights due diligence in their supply chains to combat abuses, including modern slavery. We have produced several guides for public procurement practitioners, including to help public entities improve their Modern Slavery statements under the UK Modern Slavery Act (2015). In this section you can access Guidance for Universities, Local Authorities and a general Statement Checker.

Reporting under the UK Modern Slavery Act: Good Practice

Modern Slavery statements should reflect organisations’ efforts to design and exercise human rights due diligence to identify, prevent, mitigate and even remediate the human rights violations in their supply chain. Since the passing of the UK Modern Slavery Act we have been researching and reporting on how UK public buyers, in particular Universities and Local Authorities, are responding to their obligations and responsibilities under the law. The Transparency in Supply Chain reports we have produced over the years analyse good practice, encourage learning and collaboration and point at examples of what should be avoided so organisations can enhance and strengthen their own policies and procedures and adequately report on them and their effects.

Policy Recommendations and Research on Public Procurement, Human Rights and Global Supply Chains

Our research informs wider recommendations we provide on how to improve practice, policies and legislation, both at national and international level, which we publish in a series of BHRE Policy Briefs and Papers. In this work we collaborate with a range of organisations, including Good Electronics, the Fair Trade Advocacy Office, Brot fur dei Welt (Bread for the World) and Corporate Justice UK. Our academic research and publications inform all we do.
